BALUCHI

Where the beautiful primitive looking Baluchi rugs come from is still a question that has never been settled. Of course they are generally supposed to come from Baluchistan, the country east of Iran and south of Afghanistan which is now part of west Pakistan. But the fact seems to be that the boundaries of the region where carpets are made are quite fluid, and that most of these rugs are probably made by Baluchi tribesman in Northern Khurasan, in Iran.Because of the gloomy wilderness of the Baluchistan area, the scenery is reflected in the rugs with their dark, sombre colouring of brown and beige, though dark reds with an occasional white motif are also characteristic. These rugs are produced by about a dozen nomadic tribes, each with its own distinctive pattern, but the colours are the same.
